Health and wellness is an important part of our life. Regardless of age, wealth, or social status, health and wellness in both physical and cognitive aspects are instrumental for an individual to function and thrive in human society. In the pursuit of personal wellness, there are certain roles and functions computing technologies can fulfill. For example, computing technologies have been used to help people adopt healthy lifestyles, monitor patients’ vital signs remotely for them to receive prompt help, and even in competitive sports to help coaches personalize training regimes to boost athletes’ performance. The goal of this special issue is to foster research in both insightful theoretical analysis and real world practices in healthcare computing. The aim is to bring together scholars to identify the key techniques characterizing wellness computing from both a theoretical and a practical perspective. In this special issue, we have selected papers on both the theoretical and the practical aspects of wellness computing. We feature articles reporting research experiences with wearable computing devices for wellness computing and imaging technologies helping healthcare professionals interpret medical images. We hope it will serve as a good starting point for more in-depth discussions among the researchers as well as the industry practitioners. Chunyan Miao
