Special Issue on AI Ethics and Governance Body of Knowledge (AI E&G BoK)
Artificial Intelligence (AI), as a disruptive technology, has revolutionized our world leaving its mark on all major sectors, e.g. finance, education, healthcare, agriculture, transportation and industry. It has bee widely adopted by organizations in order to help understand their business, enhance efficiency, reduce cost, automate production, or aid humans in the decision making process. As such, AI is considered as one of the most important engines for the future economy.
With increased use of AI, comes increased scrutiny. Experts around the world and now looking at what is now known as AI Ethics, how data used in AI systems are collected, and how the resulting data and recommendations are generated, concerned about the potential for misuse of data as well as the possibility of biased decisions based in imperfect data. AI Ethics has drawn public attention with more and more countries/organizations setting up frameworks/rules/guidelines of AI governance. According to Singapore’s National Strategy, AI needs to be deployed and used in a responsible way, least public trust be broken.
With this background, based on “Model AI Governance Framework 2.0” by IMDA, Singapore, the AI Ethics and Governance Body of Knowledge (AI E&G BoK) has been developed to sustain and support industry adoption of responsible AI. The BoK aims to explain the principles of AI Ethics/Governance as defined in the Model Framework as â 1) Human-centric and 2) Transparent, fair and explainable, as well as guide organizations and professionals on how to implement and deploy responsible AI solutions.
This special issue of IJIT is a gathering of the most representative works in AI Ethics and Governance BoK, bringing together the research and industry to discuss the principles and best practices of AI ethics and governance. This issue covers 4 main topics:
1. AI Governance
2. Human Centricity
3. Ethical Data Management
4. AI Explainability
In this special issue, we gratefully thank the contribution from guest editor Raju Chellam. I hope that the work here can help raise public awareness on AI ethics and aid both organizations and professional in following the guidelines as depicted in the AI E&G BoK in order to implement and use AI in a responsible manner.

Special Issue on Artificial Intelligence for Social Good
Artificial intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly intertwined with our daily lives, the issue of AI ethics has become a focal point of public debate and discussion. Not only do we need to discuss how social contracts must be adapted in order to accommodate AI in future societies, but also how to engineer future AI systems that understand and respects human morality and ethics.
This special issue aims to present recent works on these topics from the academia and the industry for readers to get an initial grasp on this complex and evolving field.
The focus of this special issue will be on AI for social good. Inside it, we invite researchers and practitioners to discuss techniques and experience designing novel AI solutions to help our societies deal with major health-related issues such as chronic pain, Parkinson’s disease and frailty, as well as enabling the younger generations to communicate more effectively with the elder generations.
On behalf of the IJIT Editorial Board, I wish that this special issue can provide our readers with insight into how AI is making a positive impact on societal issues, and inspire more innovative thinking towards how we can address these challenges together.

Special Issue on Digital Twin and AIoT
Computational systems that interact with the real world may need to assess, simulate, and monitor the effects of its actions; they may need to watch out for and respond to environmental changes in a timely manner. In order to achieve these purposes, it is often beneficial to build a faithful digital model of the real world, known as a Digital Twin. Such models have proven indispensable for smart manufacturing, precision agriculture, and many other application areas.
The technology of Digital Twins and Artificial Intelligence of Things (AIoT) achieves the above goals by the combined use of ubiquitous sensors, Internet of Things, data analytics and artificial intelligence. Building a Digital Twin is no small undertaking, requiring interdisciplinary collaboration, systematic thinking, and thorough understanding of the application domain.
This special issue contains four articles on the topic of Digital Twins and AIoT with insights from both the academia and the industry, covering applications in manufacturing, e-commerce, and agriculture, as well as the relationship between knowledge graphs and Digital Twins. On behalf of the IJIT Editorial Board, I hope that this special issue can provide our readers with examples and insight of how Digital Twin and AIoT systems are conceived, designed, and/or implemented and can facilitate the realization of the Smart Nation that is Singapore.
